It waits for you to settle in before it asks you to feel something. It is a test of patience that only works if you are willing to sit with the discomfort.
What the critics said
The reviews were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 27% as of October 2024, with an average rating of 4.7 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 36 out of 100 as of August 2025, a score it files under generally unfavorable. The consensus is grim, morose, and illogical. Todd McCarthy of Variety called it an "endlessly sentimental fable" that aims only at the heart. A. O. Scott of The New York Times went further, describing it as "crazily awful." Roger Ebert found the mystery compelling, even if the plot kept the audience out of the loop.

Will Smith moved from I Am Legend to Suicide Squad. Woody Harrelson moved from No Country for Old Men to The Hunger Games. Rosario Dawson moved from Sin City to Percy Jackson. The credits simply list what followed. They do not prove the film changed anyone’s trajectory. It just happened to sit in the middle.
