Created by Lloyd Morrisett, Joan Ganz Cooney, and Jim Henson, it mixes live-action street scenes with puppet sketches to teach basic concepts. The format relies on fast action, humor, and music to hold attention. Early on, researchers thought kids could not follow long stories, so the show used individual segments. By season 20, that assumption shifted, and the street scenes became evolving storylines. The Muppets and humans eventually interact, a change that came after testing showed children paid more attention to the puppets than the people. It runs 30 minutes per episode. With 56 seasons and 3,669 episodes, the total watch time is 1,835 hours. That is a lot of time to spend on a sidewalk.
What the critics said
The initial reception was unapologetically positive. Newsday noted that newspapers and magazines published "glowing" reports on the production team. By 1970, the show had collected twenty awards, including a Peabody and three Emmys. It later earned a second Peabody and four Parents' Choice Awards by 1995. The consensus was not universal. Mississippi’s state PBS station voted in 1970 not to air it, citing a cast that was "highly [racially] integrated." Educator Herbert A. Sprigle and psychologist Thomas D. Cook also found negative effects during the first two seasons. The praise was loud; the objections were quiet but persistent.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10. When it premiered in 1969, it aired on 67.6% of American televisions and earned a 3.3 Nielsen rating, reaching 1.9 million households. By its tenth anniversary in 1979, nine million American children under 6 watched it daily. Ratings dipped in the early 1990s, prompting structural changes. By 2006, it was the most widely viewed children's television show in the world, with broadcasts in over 120 countries. A 1996 survey found 95% of American preschoolers had watched it by age 3. By 2019, it held 100% global brand awareness. The numbers argue for a certain kind of inevitability.
