The reception was lukewarm, to put it kindly. Rotten Tomatoes gave part 1 a 32% approval rating from 34 reviews. The consensus noted the show’s "affections are obvious," but criticized it for settling for a "just-another-retelling" rather than probing deeper into the woman behind the legacy. Metacritic scored part 1 at 48 out of 100, labeling the response mixed or average. Part 2 fared worse, sitting at 14% on Rotten Tomatoes.
