The tension comes from the fact that everyone you love might be an alien.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 52% with an average score of 6.1 out of 10, while Metacritic lands on 63 out of 100. The consensus calls it a darker, more mature MCU entry that steadies after a slow start. Richard Newby of Empire rated it 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a "riveting, tense drama" that looks beyond the sheen of superheroism. Eric Deggans of NPR called it an "antidote to superhero fatigue," praising the focus on a flawed hero. Not everyone bought in. Barry Hertz of The Globe and Mail found the pace sluggish and the dialogue soul-deadening.
How it did with audiences
Parrot Analytics measured the show as the most in-demand new series in the U.S. from April 1 to June 30, 2023. It hit 42.1 times the average demand in its first 30 days, a spike higher than other Marvel shows on Disney+. Whip Media ranked it the seventh most-watched streaming original of 2023. TorrentFreak noted it was the fifth most-pirated series that year. Parrot Analytics also called it the third most in-demand streaming original, at 40 times the average. Audiences watched it, shared it, and likely argued about it.

Samuel L. Jackson moved from The Avengers (2012) and Pulp Fiction (1994) to Argylle (2024), Damaged (2024), and Afterburn (2025). Ben Mendelsohn, who appeared in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Ready Player One (2018), followed with Roofman (2025).
