A masked villain wreaks mayhem on the city of Coolsville with a monster machine that creates real-life versions of Mystery Inc.'s former foes like The 10,000 Volt Ghost, The Cotton Candy Glob, The Skelemen and The Pterodactyl Ghost. Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, Velma and Scooby-Doo launch an investigation into the monster outbreak that leaves Shaggy and Scooby questioning their roles in Mystery Inc. Eager to prove their detective skills, the ever-ravenous duo comes up with a secret plan to solve the mystery all by themselves. Can the gang unravel their most challenging case?

Raja Gosnell directs this 2004 sequel, which runs 93 minutes. A masked villain uses a machine to create real-life versions of the gang's old enemies, including a ghost made of cotton candy. The group investigates, but Shaggy and Scooby-Doo question their roles in Mystery Inc. They decide to solve the mystery on their own, fueled by appetite and a need to prove their mettle. It is a film about friendship fraying under pressure, or perhaps just hunger. The monsters are silly, but the stakes are personal.
What the critics said
Critics did not exactly rave. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 22% as of January 2025, with an average of 4.3 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 34 out of 100, a score it files under generally unfavorable. The consensus is that only the very young will get the most out of this silly trifle. Roger Ebert called it a silly machine whirled with undeniable skill, a compliment that sounds like a warning. Dave Kehr saw it as filler for kids waiting for Harry Potter. Some found the animation improved, but the manic mugging spoils the fun. It is a film only a six-year-old on a sugar rush could love, which is a fair description of the target demographic.
How it did with audiences
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed opened March 26, 2004, taking in $29.4 million for the weekend. It finished with $84.2 million in North America and $181.5 million worldwide. That total sits more than $90 million below the first film’s $275.7 million. It ranked as the 29th highest-grossing film of 2004. On TMDB, users give it a 6.1 out of 10. The sequel made money, but less than the original. Math is unforgiving.
What came next for the cast
Lillard stepped from Scream into Five Nights at Freddy's and The Descendants. Cardellini went from Legally Blonde to Avengers: Endgame and Green Book. Gellar followed with The Grudge 2 and Do Revenge. Prinze Jr. returned to I Know What You Did Last Summer. These shifts happened around the film, not because of it. The credits simply mark a pivot point in four distinct trajectories.
