What kind of watch this is

Schitt’s Creek is a 2015 comedy about a family that loses everything and ends up in the town they mocked. It is 29 hours long, which is a manageable amount of time to spend watching people be profoundly, unironically kind. The humor comes from the gap between their past and their present, not from cruelty. You will not learn anything about small-town politics, but you will learn how to be nice to people you do not like.

What the critics said

The first season landed in the "mixed to positive" range, a category that usually means the jury was still deciding. Rotten Tomatoes tallied a 68% approval rating from 28 ratings, averaging 6.4 out of 10. Metacritic scored it 64 out of 100, a number that translates to "generally favorable." Vinay Menon of the Toronto Star called it "one of the best CBC comedies in years." Not everyone was convinced. Mike Hale of The New York Times found it "drab and underwritten.

How it did with audiences

Schitt’s Creek skipped the box office entirely, so we look at what viewers think. On TMDB, users rate it 7.8 out of 10. That is a solid score for a show about a rich family going broke, suggesting audiences found the disaster charming. It proves you don’t need a billion-dollar budget to make people hit refresh.
