What kind of watch this is
Schindler’s List is a 1993 war drama directed by Steven Spielberg. It runs 195 minutes, which is a long time to sit in the dark. The film follows Oskar Schindler, a businessman who saves over a thousand Jewish lives by employing them in his factory. Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes lead the cast. The tagline, "Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire," sets the moral weight before the first frame appears. This is not a watch for a casual Friday night. It is a demanding experience that asks for your full attention and leaves a mark.
What the critics said
The numbers are as close to unanimous as film gets. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 98% approval rating as of January 2026, averaging 9.2/10 from 137 reviews. Metacritic’s Metascore sits at 95/100, based on 30 critics. Stephen Schiff of The New Yorker called it a masterpiece that "will take its place in cultural history and remain there." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it four stars, labeling it Spielberg’s best. Even the harshest critics seem to concede the visual brilliance of the Kraków ghetto sequence. It is rare for a film to be both the most intense and the most restrained thing in the room.
How it did with audiences
A $25 million budget yielded $97 million in the United States and $322 million worldwide. That is a strong return on investment, though perhaps not the most profitable year in Hollywood history. On TMDB, users rate it 8.6 out of 10. IMDb lists a 9.0/10 weighted average as of February 2026. In Germany, the film drew six million admissions. Audiences clearly did the math before the studio did.
Awards
The film collected 12 awards from 12 nominations. Steven Spielberg took home the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Janusz Kamiński won for cinematography, Michael Kahn for editing, Steven Zaillian for the adapted screenplay, Allan Starski for production design, and John Williams for the original score. It also picked up the BAFTA for Best Film. Twelve wins from twelve nods is a clean sweep that leaves no room for argument.
