Scarface (1983)
He loved the American Dream. With a vengeance.
After getting a green card in exchange for assassinating a Cuban government official, Tony Montana stakes a claim on the drug trade in Miami. Viciously murdering anyone who stands in his way, Tony eventually becomes the biggest drug lord in the state, controlling nearly all the cocaine that comes through Miami. But increased pressure from the police, wars with Colombian drug cartels and his own drug-fueled paranoia serve to fuel the flames of his eventual downfall.

New York magazine dismissed it as an empty, bullying, overblown B-movie. Kurt Vonnegut and John Irving both walked out after the chainsaw scene. David Ansen of Newsweek called it a grand, shallow, decadent entertainment. Roger Ebert gave it four stars, later adding it to his Great Movies list. Leonard Maltin gave it 1½ stars, noting it wallows in excess. He later expressed surprise at its cult status.

A $25 million budget against $66 million worldwide is a solid return, though not a cultural earthquake. It earned $45 million in the United States, placing it as the 16th highest-grossing film of 1983. On TMDB, users rate it 8.2 out of 10. The numbers suggest a steady, durable hit rather than a fleeting trend.
What came next for the cast
Pacino arrived fresh from the Godfather films. He later starred in Heat and joined the ensembles of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood and The Irishman. Pfeiffer stepped in from Grease 2.
