What kind of watch this is
San Andreas is a 114-minute action thriller directed by Brad Peyton. It pairs Dwayne Johnson’s rescue chopper with the kind of seismic disaster that makes physics take a holiday. The film runs on pure momentum, trading subtlety for scale. It does not ask you to believe in the science; it asks you to believe in the spectacle. That is a fair trade, provided you are in the mood for things to break.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 48% with a 5.2 average, while Metacritic lands on 43, a score it files under mixed or average. The consensus notes the effects are outstanding, but the plot is less than structurally sound. It is a film that knows what it is. Andrew Barker of Variety noted that false advertising is not one of the charges against it, as it promises nothing but CGI destruction, which it delivers exactly. Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly found it a blast of giddy, disposable fun. Earth Magazine, less amused by the geology, called it dreadful.
