What kind of watch this is
Emerald Fennell directs this 131-minute drama, comedy, and thriller with a tone that refuses to pick a lane. The film oscillates between sharp social satire and slow-burn obsession, keeping you off-balance from the first minute. Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi drive the tension, their chemistry less romantic and more predatory. It is a film that treats class as a battlefield and obsession as a sport. You will not know if you are laughing or sweating until the very end.
What the critics said
Critics found the film more divisive than the visuals suggested. Rotten Tomatoes counts 71% positive reviews as of August 2024, while Metacritic assigns a 61 out of 100 based on 53 critics, a score it files under generally favorable. Rex Reed gave it 4 stars, calling Barry Keoghan’s performance "intricately palpitating and jaw-dropping." Maureen Lee Lenker awarded it an "A," describing it as a "Gothic thriller dusted with poisonous candy-pop glitter." Not everyone was swept away. Sophie Monks Kaufman in Sight and Sound found the story’s treatment of characters "increasingly ruinous," noting the most menacing moment is a passive-aggressive karaoke choice. It is a feast that some viewers found slightly indigestible.
