What kind of watch this is
Rocky IV is a 91-minute drama where the stakes are explicitly nationalistic. Stallone’s Rocky trains in Siberia to fight Dolph Lundgren’s Drago, a 261-pound Soviet machine. The film treats this as a geopolitical event, not just a sports match. It is earnest to a fault. The training montages are grueling, the music is loud, and the ideology is heavy. You do not need to care about boxing to understand the tension here. The fight is the point, and the point is the Cold War. It is a blunt instrument, but it swings with commitment.
What the critics said
The scores are unflattering, which is a surprise only if you forgot the movie exists. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 40% as of August 2024. Metacritic lands on 40 out of 100 as of July 2025. The average rated review is 5.1 out of 10 as of October 2021. No one called it a masterpiece.
How it did with audiences
Rocky IV grossed $300 million worldwide, a figure that made it the highest-grossing Rocky film. In the United States and Canada, it took in $127.8 million. For six weeks, it sat at number one, holding the top spot through the holiday season. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10. Stallone was quoted saying the financial success led him to envision a Drago-centric sequel, but he scrapped the idea because the fighters were incapable of reason. The money spoke louder than the injury reports.
Awards
Rocky IV collected 5 Golden Raspberry Awards from 8 nominations at the 1986 ceremony. Sylvester Stallone took home Worst Actor and Worst Director, sharing the former with Rambo: First Blood Part II. Brigitte Nielsen claimed Worst Supporting Actress and Worst New Star, the latter shared with Red Sonja. Vince DiCola won for Worst Musical Score. The film also took home Germany’s Golden Screen Award and Dolph Lundgren won a Marshall Trophy for Best Actor. The Razzies remain the only ones to notice.
What came next for the cast
Sylvester Stallone moved from First Blood to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Carl Weathers swapped boxing rings for a blaster in Predator, then again in The Mandalorian. Talia Shire returned to the Corleone family for The Godfather Part III. The timeline offers no evidence that Rocky IV triggered these pivots. It simply sits there, a fixed point in three very different orbits.
