What kind of watch this is
Ricky Gervais Alley Cats is an animated comedy where feral cats cause chaos on the streets. It runs for 2 hours total, a short commitment for a series that prioritizes chaos over character development. Gervais voices Gus, joined by Tom Basden as Ponce and Andrew Brooke as Fang. The tone is blunt and unapologetic, trading subtlety for sheer volume. It is the kind of show that does not care if you like cats, only that you laugh at what they break.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes records 20% positive reviews out of 20, with an average rating of 3.4/10. Critics panned the writing, pacing, and shock humor. Dani Kessel Odem called it "an uninspired, unfunny slog." Lucy Mangan gave it two stars, labeling it "lazy, crude and boring." The consensus was harsh, with some ranking it among the year's worst television. Variety offered a counterpoint, finding it "surprisingly bittersweet." John Cleese called it "quite wonderful." The division is stark.
How it did with audiences
Ricky Gervais Alley Cats landed a 7.8 TMDB user score. That is a solid mark for a show built on the premise that humanity is a glitch in the system. There are no box office figures to parse.
