What kind of watch this is

Russell Mulcahy directs this 94-minute film, which takes the apocalypse out of the city and into the Nevada desert. The premise is simple: survivors drive a caravan toward Alaska while fighting zombies and the Umbrella Corp. The tone shifts from contained horror to open-road action, trading tight rooms for endless, dusty horizons. It is less about atmospheric dread and more about the sheer volume of things trying to kill Alice. If you want a movie where the landscape itself feels hostile, this is it. The desert does the work that a script might have tried to do.

What the critics said

Critics agreed the movie ran on fumes. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 24% as of October 2024, with an average rating of 4.4/10 from 101 reviews. Metacritic lands on 41/100 as of August 2025, signaling mixed or average reception. The consensus is that the action is impressive but the plot is pedestrian.

Not everyone was so harsh. Kevin Crust of The Los Angeles Times called the story "surprisingly engaging." Steven Hyden of The A.V. Club warned that "anybody who has ever seen a zombie movie can figure out what happens next." The digital airbrushing on close-ups left many reviewers feeling it was unnecessary.

What came next for the cast

For Milla Jovovich, the franchise became a treadmill, spinning her through sequels until the credits stopped mattering. Iain Glen took a different path, stepping from Kingdom of Heaven into Game of Thrones. Oded Fehr lingered in the Mummy orbit before drifting toward Star Trek: Discovery, a long corridor with interesting doors. The film did not cause these turns. It merely marked the point where their trajectories diverged into very different landscapes.
