What the critics said
Critics largely found the humor effective. R.L. Shaffer of IGN called the writing zany, absurd, and hilarious, noting that it never ceases to tickle the funny bone. Neil Lumbrad of DVD Talk saw an offbeat sense of humor that makes the title peculiar and hilarious, comparing the randomness to classic Looney Tunes shorts. He deemed it a comedic animated gem.
Not everyone agreed. Alasdair Wilkins of The A.V. Club found it more pleasingly weird than funny, noting that 11-minute plots can occasionally be too complex to explore completely. He preferred the show when it focused on jokes and character moments rather than intricate setups. The reception was positive enough for Entertainment Weekly to rank it seventh on its list of best Cartoon Network shows in 2012.
How it did with audiences
Regular Show landed as an instant hit, with its first two seasons ranking number one in their time slot among key boy demos across all of television, according to Nielsen Media Research. The pilot drew 2.097 million viewers, and subsequent episodes saw sharp gains, including a 65% jump in children aged 2–11. While the Season 2 premiere dipped slightly to 2.067 million, the Season 4 premiere climbed back to 3.047 million. On TMDB, users rate it 8.6 out of 10.
