Natsuki Subaru, an ordinary high school student, is on his way home from the convenience store when he finds himself transported to another world. As he's lost and confused in a new world where he doesn't even know left from right, the only person to reach out to him was a beautiful girl with silver hair. Determined to repay her somehow for saving him from his own despair, Subaru agrees to help the girl find something she's looking for.

Re:ZERO is a 2016 fantasy series where a convenience store errand turns into a trap. The hook is the death loop. Subaru dies, resets, and tries again. He is not a chosen one. He is a regular guy with a cheat code that feels like a curse. The tone is sharp and unforgiving. It treats its protagonist’s suffering as a puzzle to solve, not a tragedy to pity. The 85 episodes add up to 35 hours of viewing. That is a long time to spend watching a guy fail the same Tuesday over and over.
What the critics said
Critics gave it a pass, mostly on character work. Richard Eisenbeis of Anime Now! called Subaru the "most complex character of the year," noting how the show makes you cheer and despise him simultaneously. Andy Hanley from UK Anime Network simply listed it among 2016's best. The praise feels specific, which is a good sign.
How it did with audiences
