What kind of watch this is
Mildred Ratched arrives in 1947 with a smile that never quite reaches her eyes. She is a nurse, or so the hospital believes, but the wheels are always turning behind that polished exterior. Evan Romansky crafts a mystery where the monster is built, not born, layer by layer. Sarah Paulson anchors the performance, making every calculated kindness feel like a threat. The series runs 8 episodes across 1 season, totaling 7 hours of viewing.
What the critics said
The reception was polite but not glowing. Rotten Tomatoes tallied 96 reviews, with 61% leaning positive and an average score of 6.3 out of 10. Metacritic settled on 50 out of 100, a number that suggests a series stuck in the middle. The consensus acknowledged the style while blaming the plot holes. Nicholas Barber of BBC Online gave it 5 stars, praising the control despite the chaos. Alexandra Pollard of The Independent rated it 4 out of 5, calling the origin story "thoughtful and beguiling." Dissent existed, too. Darren Franich of Entertainment Weekly gave it a C−, arguing the clothes were merely dressing a corpse.
How it did with audiences
Ratched opened with a bang in the numbers department. Nielsen ranked it number one in its first week, citing a total of 972 million minutes of viewing time. That is a lot of minutes. Netflix reported that 48 million people watched the series in its first four weeks. The TMDB user score sits at 7.6.
