What kind of watch this is

John McTiernan directs a 107-minute science fiction thriller where a team of elite commandos gets hunted by an alien warrior in a Central American jungle. The hook is the inversion of the action genre. Instead of the humans doing the killing, they are the prey. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Dutch Schaefer, but the real star is the invisible threat stalking them. It is a tense, sweaty survival story that leans into paranoia. The jungle becomes a trap. You are waiting for it to show up.

What the critics said

The initial reception was brutal. Janet Maslin of The New York Times called it "grisly and dull," while Michael Wilmington of the Los Angeles Times dismissed the script as "arguably one of the emptiest... ever made." Even Siskel gave it a thumbs down, citing a stale mix of Rambo and Alien. Yet the film outlived its critics. Decades later, Chris Hewitt of Empire calls it a "thumping piece of powerhouse cinema," and Peter Suderman notes its status as an 80s action classic.

Rotten Tomatoes lists an 80% approval rating as of November 2022. Metacritic sits lower at 47 out of 100 as of June 2025. The audience grade? A B+.

How it did with audiences

The $15 million budget returned $98 million worldwide, a ratio that would make an accountant smile and a marketing department nervous. In the US, it pulled in $60 million, ranking 12th for the calendar year. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10, while IMDb audiences agree on a 7.8. The numbers suggest the audience did the math before the studio did.

What came next for the cast

Schwarzenegger arrived from The Terminator and Commando, then left for a franchise that kept resurrecting his character for decades. That is a specific kind of career arc. Weathers came in with Rocky muscle, moved through Happy Gilmore, and eventually showed up in The Mandalorian. Carrillo stepped out of Salvador and into Predator 2. The credits list what happened, not why.

Where it left its mark

Predator has appeared on a number of "best of" lists. Film.com ranked it the seventh best film of 1987 in 2007. Entertainment Weekly placed it 22nd among action movies in 2007. IGN named it the 13th greatest action movie in 2012. Rolling Stone readers voted it fourth in a 2015 poll. The rankings are consistent, if the criteria are loose.

William Bibbiani of IGN called it the most subversive action movie of the 1980s in a 2018 review. He argued the film satirizes the very macho archetypes it employs. That self-awareness is rare. It is also why the movie still feels sharp.
