The consensus calls the film nostalgic but inert, praising the sisterly rapport between Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman while criticizing the mechanical plotting. Nikki Gemmell of The Australian noted it lacks audacious energy and won't stick. Tim Robey of The Daily Telegraph called it "a blandly watchable but stubbornly inessential sequel." Audiences, however, were warmer, giving it a B+ on CinemaScore and a 4.5/5 on PostTrak.
