What kind of watch this is

Yorgos Lanthimos directs a 141-minute science fiction romance that reads like a fever dream. The film tracks Bella Baxter, played by Emma Stone, as she runs off with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. The tone is bizarre, operatic, and unapologetically strange. It treats its own absurdity with total sincerity. Lanthimos builds a world where the rules of morality are flexible and the visuals are overwhelming. It is a chaotic, visually stunning adventure that refuses to be subtle. The energy is relentless.

What the critics said

Critics found it hard to ignore. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 92% as of August 2024, while Metacritic assigns it an 88 out of 100 as of April 2024. That is high praise for a movie that operates on a different frequency than most. Stephanie Zacharek of Time called it "Lanthimos' finest film," a verdict that lands partly because the movie refuses to behave. It is a strange, gorgeous-looking picture. One critic, however, found the self-satisfaction stifling. The design is rich, she argued, but the ideas are thin. That is a fair counterpoint to a film that demands your attention.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $35 million. The worldwide gross hit $117.2 million, with $34.6 million coming from the United States and Canada and $82.6 million from other territories. That math works out to a tidy profit. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. IMDb gives it a 7.7/10 as of May 2026. Audiences did the counting before the studios did.

Awards

Poor Things took home the Golden Lion at Venice, a win that set the tone. The 96th Academy Awards gave it 11 nominations, and it kept 4, including Best Actress for Stone. The 81st Golden Globes handed over Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. At the BAFTAs, it collected 5 out of 11. That’s a lot of gold for one film.

What came next for the cast

Emma Stone moved from La La Land to Bugonia and Kinds of Kindness. The credits list the titles, not the causality. Mark Ruffalo stepped away from Avengers: Infinity War toward Mickey 17 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Willem Dafoe left Spider-Man: No Way Home for Nosferatu and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The calendar does not explain the pivot. It just records where they landed.
