What kind of watch this is
Oliver Stone directed this. The film is 120 minutes of mud, heat, and the slow realization that the enemy is mostly your own squad. Sheen plays the idealist, Dafoe the conscience, and Berenger the man who has already stopped pretending there is a right answer. The tagline says the first casualty is innocence. It is true. You walk in with a clean slate and walk out with a stain that will not wash out.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes lists 89% approval as of November 2022, while Metacritic scores it 92 out of 100, a score indicating universal acclaim. The critical consensus praises the ground-level view of war. Roger Ebert called it the best film of the year. Vincent Canby compared it to Michael Herr’s book. Not everyone agreed. Pauline Kael found the movie crowded, arguing it left no room for honest emotion.
How it did with audiences
$6 million in, $139 million out. Since the domestic total matches the worldwide figure, the film apparently never left the country to make its money, a logistical feat that saves the studio a transatlantic flight. TMDB users give it a 7.7. IMDb rates it 8.1/10 as of December 2025. The math is unimpeachable; the discomfort is the point.
Awards
Platoon took home 9 awards from 8 nominations. That is a better ratio than most people’s sleep schedules. Oliver Stone won the Best Director Oscar, while Arnold Kopelson picked up Best Picture. Tom Berenger snagged a Globe for Supporting Actor. Claire Simpson and John Wilkinson shared in the technical honors.
