What kind of watch this is
Percy Jackson and the Olympians adapts Riordan’s novels into a 17-hour adventure across 3 seasons. It treats a 12-year-old’s quest to return Zeus’s bolt as a genuine cosmic threat. The pacing is brisk, and the stakes escalate from a missing thunderbolt to the fall of Olympus. It is a show that trusts its audience to keep up with a 12-year-old running from monsters. The dry wit is there, but it never slows the footwork.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports 91% positive reviews from 64 critics for the first season, with an average rating of 7.30 out of 10. Metacritic assigns a weighted average of 73 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews. The consensus calls it a lovingly realized odyssey through adolescence and myth. Nicole Drum of ComicBook.com noted the series is about as perfect a television adaptation as you can get. Kathryn Porter of Paste added there is nowhere to go but up. The second season holds a 100% approval rating from 37 critics, averaging 7.45 out of 10. Metacritic gives it another 73. Critics suggest the show grows bigger and better.
How it did with audiences
Disney reported that 13.3 million viewers tuned in for the premiere within its first 6 days. By the third week, that number climbed to 26.2 million. The first season later logged 110 million hours streamed across Disney+ and Hulu in its first 7 weeks. It also became the most-watched Disney+ original series of 2024, per Luminate data. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences finally got a mythological hit that actually fits the modern streaming model.
