Penny Dreadful earned solid marks as it went. Season 1 landed at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and 70 on Metacritic, a respectable start that critics called "skillfully shot and superbly acted." The show improved as it accumulated blood. Season 2 hit 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and 77 on Metacritic. Season 3 peaked at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and 83 on Metacritic. Indiewire's Ben Travers praised the western elements, noting the production "has never looked better." The trajectory is upward, which helps when the premise is this gothic.
