It is a long, loud, and sentimental affair that builds its tension through sheer duration. The narrative waits for the mid-point to justify its existence. If you can tolerate the runtime, the history section is the only part that truly lands.

The critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 24% as of February 2026, based on 194 reviews. Metacritic lands on 44 out of 100, a score it files under mixed or average. Roger Ebert gave it one and a half stars, calling the action "redundant special effects" wrapped in a banal love story. He noted the film lacks "grace, vision, or originality." A. O. Scott of The New York Times found the dialogue dropping from actors' mouths with the "leaden clank of exposition." The consensus is that the romance is tedious, even if the explosions are spectacular. It is a war movie that forgot to be a war movie.
