Panic Room (2002)

It was supposed to be the safest room in the house.

Trapped in their New York brownstone's panic room, a hidden chamber built as a sanctuary in the event of break-ins, newly divorced Meg Altman and her young daughter Sarah play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with three intruders - Burnham, Raoul and Junior - during a brutal home invasion. But the room itself is the focal point because what the intruders really want is inside it.

What kind of watch this is

David Fincher crafted this 2002 thriller around a single, claustrophobic constraint. A mother and daughter hide in a reinforced safe room while three burglars try to get in. The film runs 111 minutes, which feels like an eternity when the air is running out. Fincher treats the architecture as a character, letting the steel door become the only thing standing between them and the people outside. It is a tense, slow-burn exercise in paranoia, proving that a locked room can feel more dangerous than an open field.

What the critics said

Critics found the film largely favorable, though not universally adored. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 76% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, based on 146 positive and 45 negative reviews. The average rating among scored reviews sits at 6.9/10. Metacritic gives it a 65/100 Metascore as of October 2025, indicating generally favorable reviews.

The consensus praised Fincher’s direction and Foster’s performance. Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars, calling it close to the ideal of a plausible thriller. Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal noted it was stripped down to atmosphere. Some critics, however, found it too mainstream after Fight Club.

How it did with audiences

Panic Room spent $48 million to make and returned $196 million, a margin that likely kept the studio’s accountants smiling through the Q&A sessions. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10. It did the math correctly, even if the critics didn’t.

What came next for the cast

Jodie Foster had already starred in Taxi Driver and The Silence of the Lambs. After 2002, she appeared in Inside Man and Elysium. Forest Whitaker brought Platoon and Good Morning, Vietnam behind him. His post-2002 credits include Arrival, Rogue One, and Black Panther. Dwight Yoakam came from Sling Blade and Red Rock West. He later showed up in Wedding Crashers, Crank, and Logan Lucky. The timeline does not prove Panic Room reshaped any of these paths. It just sits in the middle of a lot of other movies.
