What kind of watch this is
Guillermo del Toro directs a 2006 fantasy war drama that splits its time between a 10-year-old girl’s surreal quests and the brutal realities of post–civil war Spain. The film runs 118 minutes, a duration that feels precise rather than padded. It treats its fantasy elements with the same weight it gives to the historical backdrop, refusing to let the magical escape soften the human cost of the war. The narrative relies on the tension between a child’s innocence and a world that offers no mercy. It is a watch for those who want their fairy tales to carry the gravity of the world that spawned them.
What the critics said
The numbers are almost aggressively high. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 95% as of 2024, while Metacritic lands on 98 as of 2025. That 98 makes it the best-reviewed film of the 2000s on that site. Mark Kermode called it an "epic, poetic vision" where war mirrors an underworld of monsters. Stephanie Zacharek noted it "changes shape even as you watch it." Not everyone was swept away. David Elliott found the excitement tangible but the unity lacking, a fevered extravaganza rather than a cohesive whole.
How it did with audiences
The film took in $38 million in the United States and $84 million worldwide. It started slow, pulling $5.4 million in its first three weeks, but eventually became the fifth highest-grossing foreign film in the U.S. market. On TMDB, users give it a 7.8 out of 10. IMDb watchers rated it 8.2/10 as of March 2026. It also found a long tail on home video, generating $55 million from U.S. DVD sales and rentals. Audiences preferred their fairy tales on their own schedules.
Awards
It collected 7 wins from 7 nominations. Guillermo Navarro took the Oscar for Best Cinematography, David Martí for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Eugenio Caballero for Best Production Design. The film also picked up the Saturn Award for Best International Film and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form. Critics later ranked it highly.
What came next for the cast
Ivana Baquero stepped from one film to a handful of Western projects, including The New Daughter in 2009. Maribel Verdú moved from Y Tu Mamá También to The Flash in 2023. Doug Jones continued his creature-heavy path with Hellboy II in 2008. Sergi López jumped into The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in 2018. These shifts do not prove the film changed their trajectories. They just show where the credits landed next.
