What the critics said
Critics found the first season a mixed bag. Steve Greene of IndieWire gave it a B−, noting that while later confrontations buckle under plot weight, the melodrama hits a sweet spot that keeps audiences following along. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter was less forgiving, describing it as "pretty people, pretty cinematography, pretty dumb." Rotten Tomatoes reflects this divide, with Season 1 holding 77% approval. The numbers swing wildly thereafter. Season 2 climbs to 86%, while Season 3 drops to 56%. Seasons 4 and 5 both hit 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, though based on tiny sample sizes. Metacritic scores follow a similar downward trend, starting at 61 and falling to 52 by the third season.

Nielsen ranked Outer Banks number one in the U.S. streaming chart for the week of August 2 to 8, 2021. Viewers logged 2.1 billion minutes across its 20 episodes. It stayed at number one the following week with 1.16 billion total minutes. On TMDB, users rate it 8.2 out of 10.

Madelyn Cline stepped from Boy Erased into a steady stream of leads, including Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Map That Leads to You. Madison Bailey moved from Black Lightning to Time Cut. The credits list what followed, not why.
