What kind of watch this is
Created by Jenji Kohan, the series blends drama, comedy, and crime into a look at a women's prison. It runs 88 hours across 7 seasons and 91 episodes. That is a lot of time to spend in a cell. The hook is the ensemble. The inmates are eccentric, and the camaraderie is real, even when the conflict gets sharp. It is a watch for people who find truth in the small, messy details of a shared space.
What the critics said
Critics called the first season a sharp mix of black humor and dramatic heft. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 95% approval rating from 58 reviews. Metacritic scores it 79 out of 100. Hank Stuever of The Washington Post gave it a perfect score, noting prison is filled with the entire range of human emotion. Maureen Ryan of The Huffington Post said the six episodes left her hungry for more. The second season scored 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 89 on Metacritic. David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle argued it was arguably better than the first. James Poniewozik of Time suggested Larry needed to go.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. Netflix reported in 2013 that the show drew more viewers and hours viewed in its first week than House of Cards and Arrested Development. The company called it a "tremendous success" and predicted it would finish the year as their most-watched original. By 2016, it still held that title. A New York Times study later noted the show appealed more to white audiences, despite its diverse cast. A streaming landmark that outlasted its own hype.
Awards
The series picked up 6 awards, a modest tally given the noise. Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon took home Satellite Awards in 2013. Uzo Aduba won an Emmy for Guest Actress in 2014, while Jennifer Euston won for Casting. The Peabody went to Starz.
