Popular, affluent Nathan basks in the hero-worship of the town, as the star of his high school team. And both boys are the son of former college ball player Dan Scott whose long ago choice to abandon Lucas and his mother Karen, will haunt him long into his life with wife Deb and their son Nathan.

What kind of watch this is
One Tree Hill is a 2003 drama where two half-brothers share a last name and nothing else. It runs 9 seasons and 186 episodes, totaling roughly 130 hours of runtime. That is a considerable amount of time to spend watching two boys and their friends navigate the specific, repetitive circles of high school life. The show finds its life in the friction between Lucas, the overlooked street player, and Nathan, the celebrated star. It is a long, slow burn that prioritizes character relationships over plot twists.
What the critics said
Season one landed with mixed reviews. Critics compared it to The O.C. and Dawson’s Creek, but noted a distinct masculine appeal. Tracy McLoone of PopMatters predicted it would be pinned as a girl's show, arguing that boys would watch but not talk about it. Allison McCracken of flowtv.org called it a "boy soap opera," finding it a pleasurable text for female viewers. Chris Carle of IGN praised its gravity over The O.C.'s soap dynamics. Keith Helinski disagreed with the O.C. comparisons, feeling Summerland fit that slot better. The Wall Street Journal described a small town packed with hunky teenagers. Alynda Wheat of Entertainment Weekly called it a guilty pleasure, criticizing the writers for shipping parents off whenever order threatened to reign.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, viewers rate it 7.8 out of 10. That is a solid number for a show that spent years living in living rooms. No box office data exists here, so the score stands alone. It tells you the audience cared enough to click the star button. That is the only metric that matters for a series built on heartbreak and basketball.
What came next for the cast
Sophia Bush moved from National Lampoon's Van Wilder to Grey's Anatomy, a shift in genre that feels less like a leap and more like a sideways step. Lee Norris went from Boy Meets World to Gone Girl, trading school hallways for psychological thrillers. The credits list these moves, but they do not prove the show caused them. Sometimes a career is just a series of doors opening in different directions.
