Owen Gleiberman of Variety says the film gives you a chill that is also a wake-up call. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times calls it a love story, which might surprise you given the explosions. The numbers suggest the audience agrees, with a 4.3 out of 5 on Letterboxd. It is hard to argue with that.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $140 million to make. It earned $213.1 million worldwide, which sounds like a win until you factor in the estimated $300 million break-even point. Warner Bros. reportedly lost $100 million on the theatrical run. Audiences gave it a 7.9/10 on IMDb in December 2025. TMDB users rate it 7.3. The numbers say it failed. The ratings say it worked.
Awards
Eleven wins from twelve nominations. The 98th Academy Awards handed Paul Thomas Anderson Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, while Sean Penn took Best Supporting Actor. Adam Somner, alongside Murphy and Anderson, accepted Best Picture. Andy Jurgensen and Cassandra Kulukundis rounded out the haul. It was the second-most nominated film that year. A lot of paperwork for a night.
