What kind of watch this is

Mike Judge’s 1999 comedy runs 90 minutes, a duration that feels like a long afternoon in a cubicle. The humor comes from the sheer physical exhaustion of corporate existence, not from jokes. Peter discovers that hypnosis turns his misery into bliss, which is a fun idea until he tries to execute a heist with that energy. The film treats office drudgery as a horror genre. It is a sharp look at how a workplace can hollow you out, one printer error at a time.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes lists an 82% approval rating as of October 2021, with an average score of 6.8/10. Metacritic sits at 68 out of 100 as of January 2024. The consensus calls it a sharp lampoon of the office grind. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times noted that Judge treats characters like cartoon creatures, and that it works. Not everyone agreed. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it a C, finding it cramped. Audiences polled by CinemaScore during opening weekend gave it a C+. A C+ is a polite way of saying you stayed up late, but you didn’t enjoy it.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $10 million. The worldwide gross hit $11 million. In film accounting, that is a quiet triumph. In any other business, it is a very good year. TMDB users rate it 7.4 out of 10. The studio pulled it from theaters quickly.

What came next for the cast

Jennifer Aniston went from Leprechaun to Bruce Almighty. Ron Livingston traded Swingers for The Flash. David Herman moved from Born on the Fourth of July to Dude, Where's My Car?. The film did not cause these shifts, but they followed. It is a strange map.

Where it left its mark

The film outgrew its box office, finding a life on home video that surprised even its creators. By 2006, it had sold over 6 million DVDs in the U.S. alone. The impact was tangible; a chain restaurant reportedly dropped a uniform button from its dress code because customers started joking about it after the movie hit theaters. Judge told Deadline in 2014 that perhaps he made the world a better place. Entertainment Weekly later ranked it fifth among great comedies, despite initially panning it. It remains a touchstone for the absurdity of corporate life, a weirdness that few other films match.
