What kind of watch this is
Notting Hill runs 124 minutes and asks a question that sounds like a joke until you see the answer. It is a 1999 romance comedy directed by Roger Michell, pairing Julia Roberts as a global superstar with Hugh Grant as a London bookseller. The film leans into the absurdity of their gap, treating fame not as a barrier but as a chaotic energy source. It is warm, slightly self-aware, and relies on chemistry that feels unearned by plot but earned by presence. If you have seen it once, you have likely seen it twice. If you have not, the gap between those two characters is the entire engine.
What the critics said
Critics liked it, mostly. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 84% approval rating as of January 2026, with an average score of 7.1/10. Metacritic sits at 68, which it defines as generally favorable. The consensus is that it works because it is a love story, specifically one starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Variety’s Derek Elley called it "slick" and "gawky." Dennis Schwartz, dissenting, called it "pure and unadulterated balderdash." Some also found the London setting too sweetened.
How it did with audiences
Notting Hill earned $364 million worldwide. It opened at number 2 in the US and Canada, grossing $27.7 million in its first four days. That was the biggest opening for a romantic comedy at the time, edging out My Best Friend's Wedding. Runaway Bride took that record a month later, so the crown was brief. In the UK, it made £31 million, finishing 1999 as the second-highest-grossing film behind The Phantom Menace. It also became the highest-grossing British film of all time, beating Four Weddings and a Funeral. TMDB users give it a 7.3.
