What kind of watch this is
Nine Perfect Strangers is a 2021 drama and mystery that takes place at a wellness resort where the healing is a little too aggressive. David E. Kelley and John-Henry Butterworth created it, and Nicole Kidman plays Masha, the director who serves psilocybin in the food without asking. The tagline is "Retreat from reality," which is a fair warning. The guests are stressed, the resort is suspicious, and the secrets pile up faster than the yoga mats. It runs 13 hours across 2 seasons, a commitment that feels like a long weekend you cannot afford to miss. It is for people who like their therapy with a side of criminal intent.
What the critics said
The critical reception was lukewarm, a temperature that fits a show about wellness retreats. Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season a 59% approval rating with an average score of 6.1/10, based on 111 reviews. The consensus calls it "never less than watchable," a phrase that implies watching it requires a certain amount of patience. Metacritic lands on 54 out of 100, indicating mixed or average reviews.
Ben Travers of IndieWire called it a "disappointing limited series," noting that the novel's juice had been squeezed out. Alison Herman of The Ringer found it "overstuffed and undercooked." The second season did not improve matters, falling to a 46% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 50 score on Metacritic. It is a definitive sophomore slump, which is a polite way of saying the smoothie forgot to hit blend.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. That is a solid number for a film about people learning to let go of their trauma, which is less exciting to watch than to discuss at a dinner party. It lacks the box office data to claim any kind of commercial victory.
What came next for the cast
Nicole Kidman moved from Aquaman to The Northman and Lioness. Melissa McCarthy traded Ghostbusters for Thor: Love and Thunder. Michael Shannon stepped out of the Batman franchise into Bullet Train and Amsterdam. The credits list what followed, not why. The cause is not in the data.
