What kind of watch this is
Shawn Levy directs a 108-minute fantasy where a museum night watchman accidentally wakes up the exhibits. Ben Stiller plays Larry, who finds that history is loud, hungry, and entirely unhelpful. The humor comes from the sheer volume of famous dead people demanding attention while Larry tries to keep the building intact. It is a film about the specific misery of being the only responsible adult in a room full of ancient conquerors and prehistoric predators. The tagline promises life, but the reality is mostly noise.
What the critics said
The reviews landed in the mixed-to-average zone. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 42% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, with an average rating of 5.5/10. Metacritic sits at 48 out of 100 as of October 2020. It’s a score that suggests the film divides opinion rather than uniting it.
Justin Chang of Variety called it a "gallery of special effects in search of a story." James Berardinelli of Reelviews gave it 2 stars, noting Stiller does a lot of running around. Not every critic agreed. William Arnold of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer gave it a B−, calling the ambition "surprisingly worthy.
How it did with audiences
It cost $110 million and took in $574 million worldwide, a figure that secures its spot as the top earner of the trilogy. On TMDB, users rate it 6.6 out of 10. That number sits comfortably between "solid" and "I watched it while waiting for the paintings to stop moving.
What came next for the cast
Ben Stiller went from There's Something About Mary to Tropic Thunder. Carla Gugino shifted from Sin City to Watchmen. Dick Van Dyke, fresh from Mary Poppins, returned for Mary Poppins Returns. Mickey Rooney, a Breakfast at Tiffany's regular, popped up in The Muppets. The film did not hand them these scripts. It just sat in the credits while their careers took their own strange turns.
