Jessica Day is an offbeat and adorable girl in her late 20s who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three single guys. Goofy, positive, vulnerable and honest to a fault, Jess has faith in people, even when she shouldn't. Although she's dorky and awkward, she's comfortable in her own skin. More prone to friendships with women, she's not used to hanging with the boys—especially at home.

By the second episode, it was the top-rated show in the 18–49 demographic, beating out NCIS and Dancing with the Stars. Fox noticed, ordering 11 more episodes to bring season one to 24. When baseball season hit, ratings dipped nearly 30% to a 2.1 demo rating. For the full 2011–12 season, it averaged 8.22 million viewers and a 4.2 demo rating, finishing fifth on Fox and 13th overall.

Jake Johnson moved from Get Him to the Greek (2010) and Redbelt (2008) to Jurassic World (2015), 21 Jump Street (2012), and The Mummy (2017), a pivot that feels less like a career path and more like a costume change. Zooey Deschanel went from Yes Man (2008) and (500) Days of Summer (2009) to Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024) and Rock the Kasbah (2015), a shift that quietly erased the previous decade of her screen presence. Max Greenfield, meanwhile, slid from Veronica Mars (2004) to The Big Short (2015), Promising Young Woman (2020), and Shot Caller (2017). The credits list what followed, but they cannot prove the series caused any of it. It just happened to be the hinge point.
