What kind of watch this is
Nathan for You sits in the strange space between comedy and documentary, where the line between help and harm gets blurry. Nathan Fielder uses his business degree and life experiences to help real small businesses turn a profit. The result is 11 hours of watching a man with a very specific, unshakeable confidence walk into a shop and change its entire trajectory. It is not a standard makeover show. The tone is dry, the stakes are low, and the humor comes from the sheer commitment to a bit that refuses to acknowledge it is a bit. You do not need to like bad management to enjoy watching someone commit to a persona so thoroughly that it feels like a personality.
What the critics said
Critics were unambiguous. Rotten Tomatoes reports 89% approval for season 1 based on 9 reviews. Seasons 2 through 4 each hold 100%, with review counts rising from 10 to 14. The consensus praises the show for blending horror with heart, and for blurring the lines between television and reality. Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times called it the most incisive take on the 21st-century economy. John Thorp of The Guardian described the concept as genius. The Writers Guild of America awarded it Best Comedy/Variety Sketch Series in 2019, after nominations in 2017 and 2018. It appears on best-of lists from Paste, The A.V. Club, and others. The New York Times named it a top 21st-century comedy in 2021. The consensus is loud. The show is not subtle.
How it did with audiences
No box office figures exist for the series, so the money story remains a blank page. Instead, we look to the crowd. TMDB users give it an 8.2 out of 10. That is a high mark. It suggests people enjoyed being yelled at by a billionaire who just wanted to sell you a hot dog.
