My Hero Academia (2016)
This is the story of how we all became the greatest heroes.
Izuku has dreamt of being a hero all his life—a lofty goal for anyone, but especially challenging for a kid with no superpowers. That’s right, in a world where eighty percent of the population has some kind of super-powered "quirk," Izuku was unlucky enough to be born completely normal. But that’s not enough to stop him from enrolling in one of the world’s most prestigious hero academies.

What kind of watch this is
My Hero Academia is an animated action series that asks a simple, slightly absurd question: what happens when the only normal person in a world of superpowered kids decides to become the greatest hero of all? It is a loud, fast-paced ride through 8 seasons and 170 episodes, totaling 68 hours of screaming, punching, and emotional breakdowns. The hook is not the powers; it is the stubborn refusal to accept a limitation. It is the kind of watch that demands your full attention, because stopping mid-battle feels like a personal insult.
What the critics said
Critics adored it. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 100%, a score that suggests either universal acclaim or a very polite room. Alex Osborn of IGN rated the first season 9 out of 10, praising its action and characters while noting the villains felt underdeveloped. He later called the second season "truly something special." Tom Speelman of Polygon highlighted the cast, noting that even minor characters have a "fun look" to latch onto. Nick Creamer praised the music and action scenes but criticized the pacing, though he noted improvements in the second season. It is widely considered one of the best anime series of all time, a title that usually implies a lot of homework, but here the homework is just watching.
Awards
My Hero Academia racked up 11 awards from 11 nominations. The 2nd Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2018 saw the series take home seven of its ten nominations, including Best Action and Best Animation. It also picked up the "Hero of the Year" title for Izuku at the inaugural 2017 ceremony. The series later claimed the "Most In-Demand Anime Series" award in 2021, 2025, and 2026. Perfection, at least in the category of winning everything you enter.
