What kind of watch this is
Alex Gibney directs this 2026 documentary, and he clearly has a point to prove. At 235 minutes long, it is a commitment that most viewers will measure in squirmed seats rather than hours. The film treats Elon Musk not as a hero, but as a system that has escaped its handlers. It is a portrait of unchecked power, rendered with the kind of patience that suggests the director expects you to feel the weight of every minute.
What the critics said
Venice gave it a warm start, and the aggregators followed suit. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 96% based on 73 reviews, averaging 7.6 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 77 out of 100, a score that signals generally favorable reception. The consensus calls it a sharp, revealing portrait of a celebrated innovator’s turn into a controversial power broker. Owen Gleiberman in Variety found it a lacerating and important watch, noting how it exposes the way the subject coddles his own interests by passing them off as the world's. Eileen Jones of Jacobin disagreed, finding the grueling four-hour runtime exhausting and the tone irritating. She admitted that even a fervent Musk hater gets fed up before the end.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users give Musk a 5.8 out of 10. That is the score of a movie that did its job but left the audience indifferent. It is not a box office smash, as the numbers simply do not exist to prove otherwise. The rating suggests a viewing experience that was neither delightful nor disastrous, just... there.
