What kind of watch this is
Spielberg directs a 164-minute thriller that treats revenge as a bureaucratic error. The film follows a Mossad team hunting the architects of the 1972 Olympic massacre, but the real story is the moral rot that sets in after the first kill. It is not an action movie. It is a slow, suffocating look at how doing the right thing by the wrong people hollows you out. The world watched the games; this watches the aftermath.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 79% approval rating as of November 2022, based on 210 reviews. Metacritic sits at 74, indicating generally favorable reviews. Roger Ebert praised the film for making the inarguable into the debatable, placing it at No. 3 on his 2005 list. James Berardinelli called it an eye-opener, naming it the best film of the year. Not everyone agreed. Rex Reed found it a big disappointment and a bore. The consensus notes the film is well worth watching, even if it misses its lofty goals.
How it did with audiences
The production cost $70 million, a figure that likely kept the studio’s accountants awake at night. Box office data is missing from the record, so the verdict rests on the audience. TMDB users rate it 7.1 out of 10. That is a solid, respectful number. It suggests people watched it, thought hard about it, and decided it was good without being stunned.
