What kind of watch this is
Mulan is an 88-minute animated adventure that trades epic war spectacle for the quiet panic of a daughter trying to keep her father’s secret. Directed by Tony Bancroft, it leans heavily on Ming-Na Wen’s understated performance to ground the high-stakes action. Eddie Murphy voices Mushu, a dragon whose relentless commentary threatens to derail the tension every time he opens his mouth. The film works because the stakes feel personal rather than political. You are not watching for the battles; you are watching to see if she gets caught.
What the critics said
Critics mostly liked it. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 91% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, while Metacritic sits at 72 out of 100 as of October 2025. Both numbers land in the "generally favorable" zone. Roger Ebert called it "an impressive achievement" that ranks with Beauty and the Beast. He gave it 3.5 stars.
Not everyone agreed. Gene Siskel called it "a big disappointment" next to other female-led films, and Janet Maslin found it "inert." That is a specific kind of letdown, like expecting a dragon and getting a poodle.
How it did with audiences
It spent $90 million to make and collected $304 million worldwide. In the United States, it took in $121 million. That made it the second-highest-grossing family film of the year, trailing only A Bug's Life. It finished seventh overall. On TMDB, users rate it 7.9 out of 10. IMDb users give it a 7.7/10 weighted average as of February 2026. The audience did the math, then went home.
