The couple discovers they are both secretly working as assassins, and their respective assignments require them to kill each other. It is a loud, kinetic piece of 2005 cinema that treats domestic friction as a tactical maneuver. The chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie drives the action sequences, making the violence feel oddly intimate. It plays like a heist movie where the loot is a marriage license. The tagline promises a standard wedding vow, but the execution is considerably more chaotic.
What the critics said
The reviews landed in the middle, which is usually where the boring ones go. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 59% as of late 2022, with an average score of 6.1 out of 10. Metacritic is more polite, landing on 55 out of 100. That is a mixed bag, but not a disaster. Simon Braund of Empire called it a "weapons-grade star vehicle," a phrase that does a lot of heavy lifting. Daniel Saney of Digital Spy found it "fantastically fun." Not everyone bought the ticket. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle called the follow-through nonexistent. The chemistry held up, though, even if the script didn't.
How it did with audiences
It cost $110 million and took in $478 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin, though perhaps not the kind that rewrites the studio’s quarterly report. Audiences on TMDB give it a 6.7. For Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, it was their highest-grossing film at the time, a title they eventually lost to later blockbusters. The math works, even if the marriage on screen did not.
What came next for the cast
Brad Pitt carried the momentum of Fight Club and Se7en into Inglourious Basterds and World War Z. Angelina Jolie left the action-heroic frame of Lara Croft and Gone in Sixty Seconds to explore darker territory in Maleficent and Eternals. The timeline does not prove Smith caused the shift. It simply marks where the paths diverged.
