What kind of watch this is
Darren Aronofsky’s 2017 horror drama runs 121 minutes and asks you to sit still while a quiet house slowly becomes a loud, chaotic mess. Jennifer Lawrence plays Mother, a character who tries to keep the peace until the peace is physically impossible to maintain. The film leans into dread rather than jumps, letting the tension build until the viewer’s own patience wears thin. It is a test of endurance, not just of the characters, but of the audience. You will either find the exhaustion hypnotic or the pacing suffocating.
What the critics said
Critics praised the direction and performances, though they debated the allegories. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 68% Tomatometer score as of October 2024. Metacritic assigns a 76/100 Metascore as of August 2025, labeling the reviews generally favorable. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune called the script "grandiose and narcissistic," a diagnosis that fits the room. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian saw an "event-movie detonation," which is a way of saying it refuses to let you sit comfortably. Some audiences gave it an F.
How it did with audiences
It cost $30 million and took in $44 million worldwide, a margin that keeps the lights on without setting the world on fire. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. Audiences seemed to have read the room before the studio did. The opening weekend opened to $7.5 million, finishing third.
What came next for the cast
Michelle Pfeiffer went from a 1983 hit to the Marvel universe. Javier Bardem shifted from Bond to Dune. Ed Harris jumped from The Truman Show to Top Gun: Maverick. Jennifer Lawrence stayed in the blockbuster lane, moving from Hunger Games to Dark Phoenix. The credits list these jumps. They do not say mother! caused them. Sometimes a film is just a dot on a long, winding map.
