What kind of watch this is
Bennett Miller directs Moneyball with the patience of a man who has all the time in the world, stretching 134 minutes into a meditation on what a statistic actually measures. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, a general manager who treats a baseball diamond like a spreadsheet, hunting for value where the old guard sees only superstition. The film is quiet, almost painfully so, letting the numbers do the talking while the players struggle to keep up. It is a drama about the cold comfort of data, where the loudest victories are silent and the losses are just another row in a column.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed on the quality. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 94% approval rating, with an average score of 8.0 out of 10. Metacritic assigns it an 87 out of 100, a score that signals universal acclaim. IMDb users rate it 7.6 out of 10. Roger Ebert gave it four stars, citing the screenplay's intelligence. Peter Travers called the writing dynamite. Not everyone was convinced. Bill Weber found the story formulaic, arguing it flattens a daring concept into genre conventions.
How it did with audiences
It spent $50 million to make a movie about spending money, and returned $110.2 million worldwide. That’s a tidy profit, though not a blockbuster. Its opening weekend took in $19.5 million, placing it second behind a re-release of The Lion King. A drop of just 38.3% in its second week shows audiences stuck around for the stats. TMDB users rate it 7.3, while IMDb lists a 7.6/10 as of March 2026. The numbers suggest fans appreciate a spreadsheet with a pulse.
