Peter Debruge of Variety called it a dense, dynamic affair that makes stunning use of Chastain's talent. Mike Ryan of Uproxx noted it is a perfect story for Sorkin, missing only President Bartlet.

The film cost $30 million to make and took in $59 million worldwide. It opened on Christmas Day with $1.04 million from 271 theaters, then expanded in January to debut at $6.9 million.
