What kind of watch this is

Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct Ethan Hunt in a 170-minute action thriller where the villain is a global AI. The stakes are no longer a single city or a secret formula; they are the operating systems of every government on Earth. Hunt is chasing a ghost that can see him before he moves. It is a long film, and it treats that length as a feature rather than a bug. The tagline is "Our lives are the sum of our choices," which feels less like a movie quote and more like a resignation letter from the human race.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports 80% positive reviews, while Metacritic lands on a 67. Critics praised the action, then critiqued the exposition in the first hour. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it a "wildly silly, wildly entertaining adventure." Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune saw a "satisfying capper" in the finale. Not everyone agreed. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com found the first hour "unwieldy and truly clunky." It is a sendoff that accomplishes its mission.

How it did with audiences

The budget sat at $400 million, a figure that made the $598.8 million worldwide total feel less like a win and more like a close call. In the United States and Canada, it grossed $197.4 million, while the rest of the world added $401.4 million. It opened strong, taking in $64 million over its first three days, though it finished second behind Lilo & Stitch. TMDB users rate it 7.2 out of 10.
