What kind of watch this is

Tim Burton directs a 127-minute fantasy adventure that feels like a storybook left in the rain. Jacob, played by Asa Butterfield, lands on an island to protect orphans with special powers from creatures wanting them gone. Eva Green runs the home, and Samuel L. Jackson plays Barron. The tone is whimsical, but the stakes are personal. It is a film that trusts its audience to suspend disbelief without explaining every magic trick. Press play if you want a world that looks handcrafted and slightly crooked.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 64%, a number that feels slightly off-balance next to the 5.9 average user rating. Metacritic lands on 57, which it files under mixed or average. The split is real. Critics loved the look and questioned the plot. Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian called it an extremely pleasing formula. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times warned the story gets awfully busy. You can appreciate the weirdness without trusting the script.

How it did with audiences

It cost $110 million and made $318.2 million worldwide. The United States and Canada accounted for $100.6 million of that, while other territories added $217.5 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10. Variety called the opening "a mediocre start" given the budget.

What came next for the cast

Eva Green arrived from Casino Royale and Dark Shadows, then headed toward The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan and The Three Musketeers: Milady. Asa Butterfield came from Hugo and left for Sex Education. That is a swing from child actor to teen drama lead. Samuel L. Jackson walked in with Pulp Fiction credits and walked out into Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Captain Marvel. Judi Dench brought Skyfall with her. The timeline records these shifts. It does not credit Tim Burton with any of them.
