What kind of watch this is

Minority Report is a 2002 science fiction thriller where the law stops being reactive and starts being predictive. Steven Spielberg directs Tom Cruise as a cop who hunts criminals before they act, until the system flags him for a murder he has not committed yet. The film runs 145 minutes, a long enough stretch to make you feel the weight of a future that already knows your next move. It is less a story about catching bad guys and more a study of how comfortable we get when our choices are already written. The tension comes from Anderton running against a clock that is already ticking backward.

What the critics said

Critics largely agreed that Spielberg delivered a hit. Rotten Tomatoes shows an 89% approval rating as of January 2026, while Metacritic sits at 80, signaling generally favorable reviews. The consensus praises the blend of high concept ideas and high octane action. Roger Ebert called it a "masterpiece." J. Hoberman of The Village Voice found it the "most entertaining, least pretentious" Spielberg film since Jurassic Park. Not everyone was charmed. Warren Buckland felt the comedic elements undermined the plot's credibility. It is a thriller that argues with itself, and usually wins the argument.

How it did with audiences

It cost $102 million and made $132 million in the United States, with a worldwide total of $358 million. That is a healthy return, though not the kind that headlines a studio’s quarterly earnings. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10. The audience did the math and found it worth the ticket, even if the studio’s accountants were still checking their spreadsheets.

What came next for the cast

Max von Sydow arrived with the weight of The Exorcist and Dune, then drifted into Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Samantha Morton bounced from Sweet and Lowdown to The Walking Dead. Tom Cruise kept doing stunts, eventually landing Top Gun: Maverick. Colin Farrell cycled through roles ranging from The Lobster to The Batman. The sequence of credits is just a sequence. It does not prove the film did any of this.
