What kind of watch this is

Minions runs 91 minutes and stays committed to its one gag: yellow, pill-shaped creatures speaking a language that is half gibberish and half English. It is an animated adventure where the plot serves the noise. The humor is loud, physical, and aimed squarely at children who find chaos funny. Adults may find it exhausting, but the film does not ask for your patience. It asks for your volume.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 55% as of July 2026, with an average rating of 5.8 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 56 out of 100 as of June 2025, which signals mixed or average reviews. The consensus finds the gibberish-fueled insanity uneven but often hilarious. Jesse Hassenger of The A.V. Club called it a franchise play all the way. Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post noted that the extra-strength Minions is too much of a good thing. The A+ to F scale audience grade was an A.

How it did with audiences

It cost $74 million to make and took in $1.2 billion worldwide, a ratio that suggests the studio’s accountants slept well. In the United States, it earned $336 million. Audiences on TMDB give it a 6.4 out of 10, a score that says the yellow blobs are charming but not profound. The numbers did the convincing; the reviews are optional.

Where it left its mark

The yellow trio outlived the initial hype, settling into a permanent spot in the Despicable Me universe. They even walked the Academy Awards red carpet in 2016, presenting the Best Animated Short Film. Sacha Baron Cohen later mocked their appearance during his Best Picture turn, a jab at the lack of diversity on screen. Director Pierre Coffin admitted in 2024 that the film’s box office was a marketing triumph rather than a quality one, though he disliked the final cut. His colleague Renaud argued against a live-action remake, fearing it would diminish the characters' popularity.
