What kind of watch this is

Ari Aster’s 2019 horror film runs 147 minutes. It turns a dreamy, sun-drenched Swedish summer into a slow, bright nightmare. The film never hides in the dark. It traps its characters in perpetual daylight, where the horror is polite, communal, and inescapable. The audience watches them smile through increasingly disturbing rituals. It is a film about the seduction of belonging, where the exit is the only thing that matters.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes shows an 83% approval rating as of November 2024, with a 7.6/10 average from rated reviews. Metacritic’s weighted average lands at 72 out of 100, signaling generally favorable reception. The consensus calls it ambitious and unsettling. John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter dubbed it the "horror equivalent of a destination wedding." Not everyone was so charmed. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times found the central couple "instructively uninteresting.

How it did with audiences

Midsommar pulled in $27.5 million from the United States and Canada, with another $20.5 million from other territories, for a worldwide total of $48 million. Its opening weekend hit $10.9 million, though it dropped 44% the following week. On TMDB, users give it a 7.1 score. IndieWire called the debut "just decent" relative to the costs involved.

What came next for the cast

Florence Pugh moved from The Commuter to Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two. Will Poulter went from The Revenant to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Bear. William Jackson Harper stepped from Paterson into Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Jack Reynor left Sing Street for Cherry and The Peripheral. The credits do not prove the film changed their trajectories. They simply list what came after.
