What kind of watch this is

Bong Joon Ho directs this 137-minute sci-fi comedy, which pairs Robert Pattinson’s Mickey Barnes with Naomi Ackie’s Nasha. The hook is simple: Mickey’s job requires him to die so the mission can continue. It is a darkly funny take on corporate burnout where the ultimate commitment is literal. Steven Yeun rounds out the crew as Timo. It is a chaotic, high-concept ride that trusts its audience to keep up with the grim implications of a job that kills you on the first day.

What the critics said

Critics saw a film that refuses to pick a lane. Rotten Tomatoes reported 77% positive reviews as of October 2025, while Metacritic assigned a 72/100 metascore based on 60 critics. Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph appreciated the genre-hopping, noting the film "veers from slapstick to absurdism to horror and back again." Others found the execution messier. Jacob Oller of The A.V. Club called it "wildly entertaining" but also "unwieldy and long-winded." That mix of high energy and low structural discipline is the film’s defining trait.

How it did with audiences

Mickey 17 cost $118 million but pulled in only $131.8 million worldwide. Since the film spent a combined $198 million on production and marketing, it needed $240–300 million to break even. Variety reported the studio would lose $75–80 million during its theatrical run. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10.
