What kind of watch this is
Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1997 film runs 98 minutes, a tight window for an alien invasion plot wrapped in a buddy comedy. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith anchor it, their dynamic doing the heavy lifting that the science fiction props cannot. The tone balances low-stakes bureaucratic annoyance with high-stakes cosmic threats, a balance that holds up better than expected. It is not a subtle movie. It does not need to be.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 91% approval rating as of January 2026, alongside an average score of 7.5/10. Metacritic assigns a Metascore of 71, a generally favorable mark. Gene Siskel called it a smart, funny, and hip adventure. Roger Ebert appreciated its self-reflective humor and alien designs. Not everyone was sold. Todd McCarthy noted the film fails to sustain its inventiveness through the remaining two-thirds.
How it did with audiences
It cost $90 million and took in $589 million worldwide, a ratio that made the studio accountants smile and the shareholders nod. In the United States, it earned $251 million. Users on TMDB give it a 7.2 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences were ready to let a guy in a tuxedo shoot alien bugs, and they did, in droves.
